Alberto was standing behind Michael, looking at me without seeing me. He appeared to be in a world of his own, despite Duvo screaming into Michael’s indifferent ear at his side. Alberto in a navy blue shirt and linen shorts, his hair tousled as though he’d just woken up.

Alberto, Alberto, Alberto…

I had almost forgotten.

I turned away from him reluctantly and blinked. Eric was looking at me. He laughed at my bashful face.

How…

They were so different.

Was it even possible to like them both? Was that what was happening to me?

No, no. Eric was only a distraction. Alberto had haunted my dreams for close to a year now. He wouldn’t be dethroned so easily. By someone… by someone like that. Hearing Joy’s crystalline laughter in my mind, I shook my head, my fists clenched.

Duvo was done screaming. Michael gazed at him patiently.

“Of course everything is ready, Laurent. You’re the one who’s ten minutes late.”

Duvo looked around the set, panting. “Binta had misplaced her—she required my assistance. Stop prying! But all the same… Thank you for holding the fort.”

Michael bit his lip, and seeing me, wiggled his eyebrows. Someone was in a good mood today. Good to know. I needed some of his chill to counteract my own stress.

Just like poor Thomas, I felt like a rubber band about to snap. Confession was an important scene, during which Adam was so intense that my character could barely hang on for dear life. Already, it was stifling inside my livery.

“We’re shooting in ten minutes,” Michael said, while Duvo moved on to torment Arthur behind the camera.

“So, you still think you can handle this?” I asked him, nodding toward Duvo.

Michael let his arms drop to the sides. “The thing is, the one I have at home likes me, at least! When he gets hyper I know which buttons to push to calm him down. This one won’t respond to the same touch, I imagine.”

“Eww.”

Michael laughed. “Yeah… Try to forget I said that.”

I turned back to Eric. He was stretching and jumping in place, as though filming a scene and running across a football field for ninety minutes were exactly the same thing.

“Zak, Zak.”

I ignored him.

“Zak.”

“Hm.”

Slowly, I shook my sleeve to take a close look at my watch.

“Zak!”

“It took you exactly 82 minutes,” I said flatly.

“What? To do what?”

“To break your promise.”

“Ah!” He paused, his finger on his chin. “In that case…!”

He lunged at me, no doubt to grab my neck and ruffle my hair. I threw my hands in front my face and leapt aside.

“You promised!”

“Only that I’d try!”

He charged again, but Joy and Melissa screamed in unison.

“Don’t touch him!” Duvo barked.

Eric froze mid movement. I looked over my shoulder at Duvo and the girls, not daring to move either. Melissa’s eyes were burning with fury.

“I have done my best with his hair and his outfit, and you won’t mess him up!”

I turned to Eric, jubilant.

“See? Don’t mess me up. It’s not allowed.”

Eric gave me a somewhat constipated look and stomped toward the snacks table. There, Joy, who was directly next to him, made a show of turning her back to him.
